Venus of Willendorf
The Venus of Willendorf originated in 24,000-22,000 B.C.E. It is represented as one of the oldest and most famous surviving works of art. The Venus of Willendorf is not the original name from when the art work was made, the name came from when it was found. Venus is the name of the Roman goddess of love and ideal beauty, Willendorf came from the Village of Willendorf where it was found.
The form of the artwork was very culturally familiarized. There was a large emphasize on the breasts, showing the nursing of a child. Next, was the little attention brought onto the non-reproductive areas of the body, such as hands, arms, fingers, feet, or the face. In fact, there were no facial features at all. The cultural aspects of this work of art is focused on the reproductive and child rearing parts of a woman. The Venus of Willendorf had a function that related to the fertility of a woman, they had the awareness of the importance of women.

Hey Chloe, it was interesting to read about something found from 24,000 B.C.E. I didn't think the expressive body shapes of the breasts and reproductive area, were meant to signify the importance of woman and their ability to nurse children. Which was something cool to learn about.
ReplyDeleteHello Chloe, It's amazing to think how old this artifact is. It is extremely beautiful this piece truly is, and how beautiful the women form is no matter the shape and size. We as a society today should celebrate every form of a woman. It would be a breath of fresh air to see more women like this in magazines. Great Job!
ReplyDeleteChloe, I think you picked a great piece of art to do a blog post on. For me, I am not an art major but to see and read about such a significant piece is quite interesting. I found it really interesting that the Venus of Willendorf was designed to show off the fertility side of women and hard showed detail to other parts of the body, Really interesting piece, I am glad you informed us about it.
